Sukkar district covers an area of 5,165 square kilometers with Shikarpur in the north and Khairpur on the south. This region is culturally rich and has a mix of Sindhi, Punjabi, Pashtuns and Balochis. The city is famous for Sukkur Barrage which was built during British rule on Indus River. This barrage has a total of 66 gates that supports one of the largest irrigation systems in the world.
People of Sukkur are mostly associated with small and large scale industries which consist of cooking ghee, cotton, cement, leather, paint, and pharmaceutical. The fertile properties of the land make it ideal for rice, bajra, tomatoes, and peas. Some of the most famous visitor attractions are Sadh Belo (temple built on the river), Sukkur Barrage, Tomb of Mian Adam Shah Kalhora, Muhammad bin Qasim Park and Jamia Masjid. Traveling to Sukkar from Lahore takes about 12 hours by road and approximately 2 hours by air. One can also travel by train, the journey usually takes about 13 hours.
